There comes a time when a family member, or even a close friend, is growing in age and growing in need of an extra hand from time to time. As the days pass, from time to time develops into a stronger need for help and, it’s at the point when the question of assisted living comes into the conversation.
So many questions surround assisted living. Should assisted living occur in the home? Should assisted living occur in a facility? When is assisted living a bad idea?
The latter of the three questions mentioned above opens up a whole new set of circumstances. Here are some points to take into consideration if you believe you may be making the wrong decision about assisted living:
-
Your parent isn’t ready for assisted living: Before exploring the idea of assisted living, you have to ask your parent if they are ready for it or not. If they are not, the resistance will cause strain on your parent, on you and on the rest of the family. This is not a fair situation for anyone to be in, so keep the lines of communication open.
-
The assisted living facility your parent chose is not covered: Assisted living is a bad idea if your parent is choosing a facility that is beyond their means. This could be a way for them to deter the eventuality of going into a facility. However, veering them toward a facility that is covered by their medical plan may be a precarious situation.
-
The assisted living facility your parent chose is not appropriate: Assisted living is a bad idea if the services your parent is choosing are not appropriate. They may be overlooking areas such as emergency response, administration of medicines and staff to patient ratios. Interview these facilities with your parent and, if they are resistant to changing their mind, it may be another deterrence (as mentioned above) to avoid the eventuality of utilizing the facility.
It is not easy seeing our parents deteriorate and it is not easy to see them struggling to do things from day to day that used to come to them with ease. These are realities many children of the elderly face daily, though, and everything has to be thought through thoroughly. If there are still too many questions about whether or not an assisted living situation is a good idea, table it until more research can be done.
