Summertime can be dangerous for the elderly as we previously discussed in our summertime tips & choices post. During times of extremely high temperatures seniors are especially at risk of suffering heat-related illnesses and injuries. There are a few things that seniors can do to protect themselves and beat the .

Elevated Risks for Seniors

Seniors do not adapt as well to hot weather. This is partly due to a reduced “thirst reflex.” This phenomenon prevents seniors from drinking enough water to maintain a healthy core temperature. In order to protect seniors, they should not stay in places without air conditioning for extended periods of time. In addition, assisted living facility staff should check them twice a day for any signs of heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

Tips for Preventing Heat-Related Illness

  • - Avoid hot meals before going outdoors.
  • - Stay away from sugary drinks.
  • - Avoid alcoholic beverages.
  • - Schedule outdoor activities in the morning or evening.
  • - Take breaks frequently and seek shady areas when possible.
  • - Allow the body to cool down.
  • - Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Alternative Activities for Seniors

To beat the heat, seniors should stay in air-conditioned facilities whenever possible. There are lots of indoor activities that are suitable for senior recreation. Many recreation directors plan indoor activities for assisted living residents during the summer months.

For information about the programs in your facility, you should contact the facility’s recreation director. Additionally, check with nursing staff to find out when patients are scheduled to be outdoors. Ask if patients are routinely monitored for signs of heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

  • - Fatigue
  • - Fainting
  • - Nausea
  • - Headaches
  • - Confusion
  • - Anxiety
  • - Extreme thirst
  • - Muscle cramps
  • - Muscle aches
  • - Weakness
  • - Sweats with cold, clammy skin
  • - Slow or weak heartbeat
  • - Dizziness
  • - Agitation
