Most assisted living facilities strive to make you feel at home. They encourage you to bring items with you, such as small furniture, decorative pieces, linens, and other creature comforts that make your room unique and comfortable for you.
Because assisted living facilities often stress individualized care and attention, you will find a variety of living options available to you – even within a single facility. There is no cookie-cutter or blueprint by which all resident rooms or apartments are constructed, because the goal is to meet the personal preferences of the residents.
Assisted Living Apartment Types
• Congregant Living: Some facilities use this term to describe living in your own apartment but having the options to share daily activities and common dining areas with other neighbors in the facility if you prefer.
• Single Occupancy, Studios, and One Bedrooms: These are efficiency apartments designed for a single resident. They usually feature a small living area, a single bathroom, and a scaled-down kitchen.
• Double Occupancy: Designed specifically for couples and roommates, these apartments are more spacious, and probably feel like any other apartment except that assisted care is available for help with daily tasks.
• Freestanding: Some facilities are grouped freestanding apartments that give residents the feel of a small neighborhood.
• High-rise: These are common in more populated areas where space is limited. Residents will live in multi-level buildings with individual apartments or rooms.
• Rooms: Some facilities offer single or double rooms with a shared bath and little to no additional living space.
Amenities
Shopping around for the right assisted living facility is a lot like shopping for a regular apartment. You should consider what amenities and services are available and compare prices.
A typical facility will be made up of 25 to 110 units, that varying in size. Of these, a few should be ADA accessible. Many include utilities and cable TV in their packages. Some offer more luxurious options like whirlpools, and you can typically chooser whether you want a furnished or unfurnished room.
