Idaho Health Care Association Director Robert Vander Merwe went on to tell the Associated Press that it has been an “explosive” growth opportunity for operators looking to satisfy the new found demand for assisted living facilities and other retirement options for Idaho’s older residents.
But people who live in the Pacific Northwest and Mountain states may want to take a closer look at what Boise has to offer for another reason: Vander Merwe admits that there are substantial numbers of vacancies in facilities because managers overestimated the demand they thought there would be for assisted living services.
Finding the right place on a national scale has been discussed in other articles, and are based on everything from the local economy to the tax rate, and can even include state regulations and housing prices. But the bubble bursting in Boise represents a current opportunity for children with aging parents who may need to make a decision sooner than later.
There are a variety of price points for residences in and around Treasure Valley, with some operators charging up to $4,000 per month. On the other hand, if a family uses funds derived from selling a home, those can be used in exchange for smaller monthly payments.
We didn’t profile Boise in our list of lesser known places where seniors can retire to, but in light of the recent developments, it’s worth noting what could make this small city in Idaho an attractive place for older Americans to choose for retirement.
According to rankings published by CNN, the income taxes are great for seniors living on fixed incomes, better than the national average. The air quality is also impressive, with ratings above those of other highly ranked places to live.
It may be a better place for seniors who are looking for more peace and quiet, or who may find themselves spending more time at home: local events not withstanding, Boise does not offer as many attractions as other cities, although it makes up for it with lower housing prices on the whole.
But the views of the foothills around town are beautiful, and the layout of the city is orderly and even, helpful for seniors with memory problems and not always the case with the western cities.
Is it the right place for your loved one? It depends whether or not you’re willing to take short commuter trips to visit them on a regular basis, whether the prices fit your budget for the area, and a variety of other factors.
