Michigan Assisted Living Information
Michigan defines an assisted living facility as an adult foster care program that provides supervised personal care facility that provides housing, meals and personalized care to adults, who are elderly, developmentally disabled, mentally ill, or physically handicapped, but who do not require continuous nursing care.
Michigan Assisted Living Facilities Scope of Care
An adult foster care facility must offer medication management, assistance with ADL’s, social activities, or other services as directed in a resident’s personal written assessment plan. A hospice or other home health agency may provide additional services to the resident in collaboration with the facility.
Michigan Assisted Living Admission Requirements
An adult foster care facility cannot admit any residents who need continuous nursing care, or whose needs cannot be met by the agency. A TB screening is required, as is a statement from the resident’s physician. A resident is not a candidate to be admitted to or allowed to stay if he or she is a danger to themselves or others, or who damage facility property.
Michigan Assisted Living Care Plan Requirements
Upon admission, a written assessment and service plan are created. The service plan is created with the resident (and/or his or her legal representative) and identifies the resident’s needs for activities, services, screening and maintenance. Service plans must be updated every year.
Michigan Assisted Living Medication Management Requirements
There are significant policies regarding the administration of medication in an adult foster care setting. Licensed staff are permitted to provide medication under a doctor’s orders.
Michigan Assisted Living Facility Requirements
A single unit must offer 80 square feet of floor space, with multiple-occupancy rooms requiring 65 square feet of space per person. One sink, one toilet and one bathing facility are required for every eight residents, with at least one on each floor with resident units. The Michigan Department of Energy, Labor, and Economic Growth’s Bureau of Fire Services regulated all safety features.
Michigan Assisted Living Staffing Requirements
Direct care staff are required to be on duty at all times to provider services as needed for residents. The minimum staff ratio is one direct care staff for every 12 residents. The administrator must have significant training and experience, and the staff must be at least 18, able to complete reports and follow written and oral instructions.
Michigan Assisted Living Medicaid Policy
The Medicaid state plan covers personal services only. However, the MI Choice Medicaid Waiver became effective in 2009, which pays for additional services beyond those that are customer in assisted living, but do not reach the level of continuous care.
Michigan Alzheimer’s Care Requirements
If an assisted living facility operates a care unit for residents with Alzheimer’s, then staff members who work in the unit must receive appropriate training and direct care staff must be present in the unit at all times. Michigan Department of Human Services, Bureau of Children and Adult Licensing
