Wheelchair Regulations

Can you provide me with the Georgia regulations related to wheelchairs for Assisted Living Facilities?

I am trying to understand which wheelchairs are classified as exceptable in these facilities and which chairs are considered a restraint and thus not excepted?

My father who has dementia currently has a tray on his chair and I am being told that Georgia for Assisted Living facilities considers this chair a restraint

Thank you,

Hi Bernard,

This is going to be a specific question for the Georgia regulatory agency that handles licensing personal care homes in the state. Per our Geogia Assisted Living information page, residents must not need physical or chemical restraints, as the regulations state. So clearly, this is why the definition of a "physical restraint" is so important regarding your father's wheelchair.

At this point, I would advise you to contact the Geogia long term care ombudsman which you can find the local contact on this page. At the bottom of the page they list local contacts for each city/county.

Good luck!
