can family member set up a residents medications . in order for resident to self medicate, if the resident is competent to take own meds but because of amount of meds has difficulty setting meds up

my father has recently moved to AL. Because of the amount of medications he takes, I set up his meds a week at a time. He takes his meds at the appropriate times without difficulty. He identifies his meds through a notebook that has the med listed what he takes it for and how often. The AL wants to administer his meds (at a cost of $500) a week bcs. they say he doesn't "know" his meds.

Hi Mjames,

I don't really have a specific answer for you. One thing I would do, is to read the agreement that was signed prior to move-in to see if there were specific medication management topics covered.

It sounds like currently, you are setting up his meds at the assisted living facility? If so, what made the AL request the changes (wanting to administer)? Was this because your father asked for help or missed some scheduled medication? If the AL has reason for concern about your fathers ability to take the medicatino accurately, even if you set them up, that might be a legitimate concern.

You might also want to contact your state's licensing office to get specific advice in terms of the state regulations and requirements.

Good Luck!
