Medicare will cover qualified health care costs while you are at the facility, but does not generally cover the cost of the assisted-living facility. In some states, Medicaid may pay for some of the costs if you have limited income. Medicaid is the joint federal and state program that helps older people and the disabled pay for health care when they are not able to pay for it themselves. Some facilities offer funding options. However, most people end up paying the cost of living in the facilities out of their own pockets. If you have long-term care insurance, it may cover some of the costs associated with living in an assisted-living facility.
I am trying to help my husbands family locate an assisted living facility or something similar for my mother in law. She is 68 years old and has trouble with bladder/bowel control. She has been falling often and can't get up on her own. She lives in Arizona, however has been here in Arlington, TX since May staying with her sister. Her sister is getting to the point where she can't handle her situation. We need to find her a home close to Fort Worth, so I can visit and check on her often. Our home is not setup where she could get around and we both work, so it would not work for her to live with us. I don't know her financial situation, but right now I need to know what our options are for her.
