My 86 yr old Father, who has Parkinson's with dementia, had fallen and broke his hip. He was already in a state of confusion to start. Usually after surgery you go to a Rehabilitation facility however due to my father's mental state and that he could not follow directions, he was not accepted into any facility. Pretty much we were being pushed out of the hospital with no real plan of care for my Father. Added with that, we still had my 86 yr old Mother to care for! This is when Happy Nest stepped in and settled our fears. As a family , if you are in this situation or simply looking for a place to care for your loved one, it's a very unnerving, scary, upsetting you name it situation to be in. I'm here to tell you that our situation was EXTREME....but after the 1st day at Happy Nest, we knew that my Father was going to be loved, cared for, valued and watched so that he was safe and happy. From the start, meeting with George, who is an LVN and in charge of helping you make decisions, will start to calm your nerves....then coordinating any Hospice or care your loved one needs, then the House Staff, who are amazing, dedicated, loving people. To tell you the truth, I don't know how they keep a smile on their face all the is a tough, sometimes not so glamorous job. Everyone is treated with love and respect as if your loved one is THEIR father, mother or grandparent. After reading this, I guarantee you will still have fears....did you do the right thing? Is my family member okay? Honestly it will take a while before you sleep at night not worrying but if you continue to visit them daily, you will see how the house is run, how things are handled for others and your family member, you ask questions, you get answers and you have a chance to become part of their healing. Pretty soon you will get close to the other house residents and their family members. My father has been at happy nest over 5 months and we went through everything you will go through but as critical as my father's condition is, he is loved, cared for, has medical supervision, bathed, talked to and never isolated from the other family members.Their motto is to not let your loved one just "lay in a bed all day" but to get them out with the others, eating at the table with others and feeling like they matter. I can not say enough about the entire Staff at Happy Nest....they are there to care for your loved one when you can't. I can honestly say that even though I'm a good care giver, they have done far more than I ever could and relieved the stress so that I can balance caring for my Mother also. With their help, we don't feel like we've just left my Father somewhere, we brought him to a wonderful community home that he himself said he likes....believe me, I've asked him if he's alright here, is he happy, does he like the Staff....he always answered "yes". Happy Nest is a Team effort and you have to make the effort also to be part of it. We can't thank them enough for their dedication to help others....Happy Nest is a "family place" not a "hospital" and you will see the difference!
