We moved our mother to Shawnee Heartland Assisted Living 12/26/13 when Phyllis and Frank Curtis were the owners. But then they sold the facility to Advantage Health Group owned by Norm and Kathy Wilcox. It was never the same after that. I want to advise all families that have loved ones in facilities to ALWAYS have CAMERAS in their rooms. That is the only way you can really see what kind of care your loved one is receiving--at least in their rooms. It was always a constant battle to get them to consistently change her sheets or give her showers. There has been some good staff throughout the years and recently, Molly and Jennifer cared and did what was right because it was right, however, most seemed to be there for a paycheck. The staffing turnover is incredible since the change of ownership, I cannot even count the number, including DON's. The most frustrating neglect of care was the struggle to get staff to go to her room and cue her to get ready for bed. This was important due to the increased unsteadiness it caused when she would sleep in her chair and then tried to get up, which resulted in a fall one time so she slept on the floor from 1am to 6:30am when the staff came in to wake her. There were nights when my sister went over there at 10:30pm and mom was not ready for bed. Staff was just watching TV and not doing their job by making sure mom was ready for bed even after our repeated requests for them to do it. Unfortunately, the care and trustworthiness of this facility is not a place where I would ever put a loved one. If I had only known my mother would have adjusted so well with a move it would have been done shortly after the ownership change. The issues with her getting quality care has been ongoing. We would have not known most of it had we not had cameras in her apartment. The staff, however, looked at this as a threat. My sister has worked in healthcare and have had cameras on her everywhere she went. It did not change the quality of care she gave. She did what was right because it was what you did. She did not fear of going into a room because of a camera. All we wanted was good care for our mother, care that was ethical and right. We had prepaid mom's monthly cost at Shawnee Heartland Assisted Living because we received a 5% discount. It was such an UNPLEASANT and nasty procedure we had to go through to get the remaining balance of her Prepaid Room/Board back. My sister went to their Corporate Office asking about our refund and was informed we would receive it 30 days AFTER our 30 day notice. I sent several emails to Rebecca Madison wanting figures for the prorated refund for the 9 days left in July, the 8 months prepay and the $1,500.00 deposit we put down in December 2013 so I could compare them to mine. I never got a reply. I went to Corporate Office myself to speak to Rebecca about the amount and when the check would be mailed out. She says "Well, I don't handle that. Norm does." I said, "Don't you think it would have been common courtesy for you to tell me that by actually answering my emails." Well, the check was actually mailed out August 24, 2018, 2 days after the 60 days and not even on an Accounts Payable program check, but just a regular check like a regular person would write to pay a bill, not a business. BUT, it was short the $1,500.00 deposit from 2013. I emailed Rebecca again about this and her reply (surprise) was that "This is the first I have heard of this." This is not true. I have emails that I inquired about that several times along with my Prepaid Rent. We finally received the $1,500.00 September 28th. That is 94 days AFTER our 30 day notice to leave the facility. In summation, DO NOT take any loved one to Shawnee Heartland Assisted Living or ANY Advantage Health Group facility. They care more about the MONEY than the residents. Everyone in the organization is related, either daughter, son-in-laws etc. We hope this Review saves your loved ones from not very good care.

Ownership changes have caused this place to go downhill.

Our grandmother was at Shawnee Heartland for less than a month and had to leave due to a medical condition. I contacted the Executive Director, Steve, by phone about any refund for payments made. I was informed to call their corporate office. I called several times, no one answers the phone or returns calls. When I called Steve back and explained this, his answer was I was talking to the wrong person. he told me again I had to call the corporate office and I would get an answer just as much as he would. To say this is horrible customer service is an understatement.
